I'm drawn to the edges of things; to the edges where shapes meet space and form lines.

Our commercial filled environments have both visual and auditory noise. I find the visual stimuli of my world so overwhelming that it's difficult to process. From the jumble of my surroundings, I collect lines which catch my attention. I collect these lines quickly and without regard to proportion or closure. Later in my studio I play with these lines, and the shapes they happen to form, by adding values in pencil. This is a laborious, quiet process which I approach in a meditative manner. I love the feel of the pencil caressing the paper.

The lines in the Detritus Series were collected from the debris of car tires found along the freeway. I'm intrigued by the contrast of the geometric chunks of rubber and the reach of the rusted wire. These drawings have a playful feel. Some of the lines I collect are from the human form. I have stacks and stacks of line collections. When I finish a drawing, I look through these stacks to find another collection of lines to work from. At times I may not recall exactly when and where the first lines were collected.
